Connection Square: From Calligraphy to Sho

Tokyo, Japan 1996 | Media

The spirit of the Tokyo Exhibition shares something with that elusive space between methodical research and boundless experimentation. The exhibition brings attributes such as Character, Ink, Colour, Form, Expressions, Fragments, Space and light into a dynamic play of relating and evolving expressions which is characteristic of Noriko Maeda’s Work. These thoughts form a background against which the infinite possibilities of sho are investigated through many different calligraphic methods and innovations. Many concepts are brought to life in these works: The idea of an inanimate line becoming filled with life and changing character, or the notion of a symbol which is able to express more than the sum of its parts. These are the deceptively simple questions which fuel a lifelong journey within the world of Sho.
