Calligraphy at first glance is simply, put ink on white paper, but when you really look, where you feel the urge to look closer, you see its multitudes of greys. You see that it is not simply black and white, yet layers and layers of greys which make up that particular shade in its final product. This is the richness of calligraphy. In every twist of my hand, in every change of rhythm and in every breath taken, a different expression is portrayed. There can never be an exact duplication of a piece of work, for each work brings with it a part of that particular day. There is a special feeling of the here and now, combined with the experiences of days lived and felt. Calligraphy is not only an act of transcribing a predefined character within its rigid definition, but a struggle to find the meaning which exists within that character or phrase. This meaning is gathered through past personal experiences, or through its relations within the world. For example, the character "moon", written on a cold winter's night displays a certain aura, where the same character of "moon" captured on a warm spring evening expresses a completely different idea, which is brought forth through its brush strokes and expression of brush work. Calligraphy is the harmoney reached between the personal experiences and the senses wih the rich history of this art form. As much as it is a personal expression which makes a piece of calligraphy, the reflection upon the traditional roots of every character I write is also very imporant, because without the richness of history which surrounds every character, there is no direction in which we can soar. |
